My mother called late yesterday evening to say she had emergency laser eye sugery on her left eye. She apparently had a rip in her retina, but luckily, it hadn't come detatched, which could've lead to blindness.
She said it started Monday night, when the little black dot she always sees in her left eye got bigger.
"The little black dot you always see?" I asked.
"Oh yeah, I've seen it for years."
"Uhm, mom, you didn't think that was abnormal?"
"I thought it was something everyone sees when they become nearsighted."
"Moooom, I'm nearsighted. You could've just asked me."
"Well, why would I ask if I thought it was normal?"
So, it seems this black spot she always sees got bigger on Monday night. And, in my mother's usual fashion, she ignored it, thinking it would go away. Then suddenly she saw a flash of light, and there were a multitude of black spots. The idea of suddenly seeing a multitude of black spots makes my skin crawl everytime I think about it. It turns out it's the eye jelly seeping through the tear in the retina. Okay, did I just gross all you readers out? I think I just grossed myself out!
Anyway, my mother had to go in for emergency surgery, and yesterday she called to let me know the sugery went well to close the tear. Although as of last night she still could see the black spot, her doctor said that was normal for a few days.
So, if you believe in prayers or sending positive energy, please send some to my mother.
Your eyes are so valuable, and if any of you begin seeing black spots, talk to your doctor immediately!
